Sir, – I suffered an undignified confrontation with the Stephen’s Green pavement while hastening for a tram last Friday.
Within seconds, I was surrounded by half a dozen strangers. They retrieved my shoe and spectacles and eventually hoisted me back to vertical again.
And, as swiftly, they melted into the holiday throng, apart from two young ladies, who insisted on remaining with me until my transport arrived.
Good news is that the bruising is subsiding and my wrist is settling into its new splint. And I finally learned a valuable lesson: persons of a certain age should not sprint for a tram.

The people who helped me were complete strangers. I want to thank them for not only racing to my rescue, but also for restoring my Christmas. And for restoring my faith in the innate kindness of our species. – Yours, etc,
