Anti-war activists

Protests receive scant attention

Sir, – Further to the claim in Oliver Sears’s opinion piece (“Why are Jews around the world held to account for the actions of the Israeli government?”, Opinion & Analysis, January 2nd) about a lack of concern for victims in other conflicts, Richard Boyd Barrett TD, and other anti-war activists, have campaigned on many world conflicts. Mr Sears’s question on the issue of the suffering in Yemen being “demoted in world opinion” is valid but is certainly not the fault of anti-war activists. Many such anti-war activists struggled for years to get letters or any coverage published in the media regarding the violent, hidden, US-supported Saudi-led war in Yemen. It was only after the brutal assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul in 2018 that the mainstream media began to take an interest. Even after that, the Dáil briefing hosted by Richard Boyd Barrett TD in March 2022 and the several protests held outside the embassy of Saudi Arabia received scant attention. – Yours, etc,

SARA O’ROURKE,

Dublin 8.
