Sir, – If any of the new cycle tracks (“New cycle routes to cover 3,500km at a cost of €1.4 billion”, News, January 11th) are created like the one at Roscrea (starting nowhere, going nowhere), cutting down many 30-year-old mature native ash and birch to provide bleak tarmac paths, then we will surely have the beginnings of new concrete jungles. What a sad and reprehensible waste of public funds. Our heritage town is on its knees. What a marketing boost the high six-figure sum spent on this “improvement” would have given to it. – Yours, etc,
GEORGE CUNNINGHAM,
Roscrea,
Co Tipperary.
