Sir, – Barry Kelly (Letters, January 16th) quotes an architectural critic describing the present St Stephen’s Green shopping centre as a pastiche of a New Orleans paddle steamer.
But it’s the only paddle steamer we have in Dublin. We have plenty of the uninteresting and unmemorable blocks with which it is proposed to replace the shopping centre. – Yours, etc,

Sir,– Regarding the proposed redevelopment of the St Stephen’s Green shopping centre – a structure built in the style of London’s Crystal Palace,and which has now acquired iconic status – given its remarkable likeness to an imposing yet graceful Victorian greenhouse, why not move the edifice lock, stock, and barrel to the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin?
You never know, its proposed replacement might, in time, also become a landmark building in the heart of the capital. – Yours, etc,
