A chara, – I couldn’t agree more with Julian Girdham’s praise for our public library service in Ireland (Letters, February 23rd).
Until a few years ago, I had not made use of my public library since childhood, but since rediscovering this fantastic institution, I cannot recommend it highly enough. In the last few months, I have been able to browse the national catalogue and have books delivered to my local library, I have found a quiet place to study and work, and have attended regular language learning events. All of these services, and many more besides, are provided free of charge and facilitated by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Many libraries also have weekend and evening opening hours. It’s a credit to all involved. – Is mise,
