Sir, – I must take issue with and assertion (Letters, April 27th) that many deposit return vending machines only accept items purchased at the store where the machine is located. This does not reflect the design of the scheme and as container barcodes are not unique to any particular retailer, it is unclear how the system could have this capability.
Whatever the downsides of the process, not least the additional hassle factor for an already enthusiastic recycler, this purported additional restriction would no doubt cross a red line in terms of public acceptance.
If it is in fact the case that any retailer has ingeniously invented such a restriction, they should be called out to ensure this type of unacceptable behaviour is quickly eradicated. – Yours, etc,

It’s crucial to recognise that people with accessibility challenges may find the system difficult, and their input is essential for any improvements. However, the constant criticism does not reflect the positive experiences of most of us. – Yours, etc,
