Sir, – My ancient car and I are in competition to see which one of us will outlast the other. I use my key to start the engine and turn it off, but apparently this method is too mundane for younger people. In every modern novel the motorist has to be far more dramatic, and “fires” the engine to start it and “kills” it to turn it off. How extraordinary! – Yours, etc,
