Sir, – Upon leaving Dublin on Friday for what turned out to be a lovely weekend in Cork, I was surprised to see, upon entering Cork (and, indeed, Limerick) signs welcoming us to Ireland’s Ancient “East”. I understand the purpose of Bord Fáilte’s marketing gimmickry, but I’m positive we had driven due west out of Dublin and then due south. Perhaps my greatest surprise, though, is that the good folk of the People’s Republic would allow themselves to be classified as Easterners. – Yours, etc,
BRIAN KELLY,
Dublin 14.
