Sir, – In an interesting letter (June 21st), prompted bv Peter Lynch’s article on infinities (“What is truly infinite may just be the abyss of our ignorance”, That’s Maths, June 20th), Sean McGibbon states that “string theory has virtually no supporting experimental evidence to support it”.
Clearly we will have to go back to basics. In order to go somewhere, we will have to start somewhere. The fundamental question remains: how long is a piece of string? – Yours, etc,
