Memories are made of this

Sir, – Further to Frank McNally’s Irishman’s Diary (June 22nd), I’m never in South Great George’s Street in Dublin without casting an eye over the building that once housed Bewleys. My lasting memory of the place is of sitting at a table, I’d say around 40 years ago, all set to enjoy a big fat sausage and a brown buttered bun. The sausage fell to the floor but not before resting for seconds on my very recently bought cream leather shoes. The grease stain never did come off. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – What a lovely ode to the Simon’s Place cafe by Frank McNally.

It’s a reminder once again that you don’t know what you have until it’s gone.

The café will be sorely missed, and I can only hope that a good home was found for my favourite item. Framed on the back wall, in elaborate script, it simply read “Don’t tell Bono, he’ll only worry.” Indeed. – Yours, etc,

BILL MURPHY,
