Teachers and secure employment

Gimmicks will not solve a wider problem

Letter of the Day

Sir, – If teachers were offered proper hours and contracts in previous years there wouldn’t be a crisis (“The Irish Times view on the new incentive payment for young teachers: a sign of a wider problem”, News, June 27th). The policy seems to be to prevent teachers from achieving stability in employment by offering less than full-time hours and temporary contracts.

I witnessed this as a Teachers’ Union of Ireland officer for many years.– Yours, etc,

ALEC QUINN,

Limerick.
