‘Windfall’ returns on corporation tax

Loopholes and exemptions

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – I have seen references to the €12 billion excess from corporation tax as a “windfall”. This implies the money just fell from a very expensive, morally neutral tree and it is a misuse of language. This money comes into Ireland because we are one of the world’s largest tax havens and offer loopholes, exemptions and “intellectual property” boxes to attract massive profit shifting from many other, often poorer, countries. We deprive them of a tax base to fund basic services, hospitals, schools and social supports. – Yours, etc,

PAUL CONNOLLY,

Cavan.
