Aviation and climate crisis

Personal responsibility

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott
The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – I write in response to the recent article by Sarah Moss (“I fly too much and I feel guilty about it, but I keep doing it”, People, July 6th).

The reality is that we all need to stop taking short-haul and long-haul flights, except for emergencies. This is necessary to do what we can to mitigate the worst symptoms of climate change impacting the poorest communities in the world which typically have the lowest carbon footprint. While I love to travel, I no longer take flights. I think it is necessary to interrogate how we live and what we do or don’t do to mitigate climate change, with the welfare of those who bear the brunt of it to the fore.

Future generations rely on everyone to act and live responsibly now. We must take individual responsibility and lobby our Government to halt the constant loss of species, habitats, biodiversity, and communities due to global warming. – Yours, etc,

GAIL O’KEEFFE,
