A chara, – I thoroughly enjoyed Beatrice M Doran’s informative article on George Roe (An Irishwoman’s Diary, July 16th) and how his distillery covered over 17 acres from Thomas Street to the river Liffey.
The 150-foot smock windmill built in 1759 which still exists is not on the grounds of the Guinness Brewery, as mentioned by the author, but it is proudly owned and maintained by The Digital Hub. The windmill is an important and recognisable structure in the Liberties, where is it also known as St Patrick’s Tower, and we are looking forward to commencing conservation works shortly to bring the ground floor back to use as a public amenity for the local area. – Yours, etc,
