Sir, – Seeing the upsurge in energy and support for Kamala Harris, perhaps the question shouldn’t be whether President Biden made his withdrawal announcement too late but possibly too early. – Yours, etc,

DAVID CURRAN,

Sir, – Following the US presidential election this year has at times felt like watching the slow decent of a whole country into madness, and a breakdown that was only averted with the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Had that bullet made its target who knows where we would be now, but it would not have been a good place. With the welcome and gracious retirement of Joe Biden from the election, we now hope that some sense of normality can return and we can see pushback against the unchallenged lies and personal insults that now pass for political discourse in the US. The recent Republican convention provided ample evidence of the demise of serious politics in a country crying out for stability. The electorate have been lured away from serious discussion on policies that impact their daily lives by a phoney culture war set up to pit ordinary citizens against each other. It deliberately distracts them from understanding the real reasons they live in the OECD country with the second highest poverty rate per 2022 data. The Democrats have approximately 100 days to put forward a real and meaningful message to millions of disaffected voters and hopefully prevent the implementation of Project 25 and the chaos it would inevitably bring. – Yours, etc,

BARRY WALSH,

Blackrock,

Cork.

Sir, – A letter writer (Letters, July 23rd) believes that history will be kind to Joe Biden. Pity the people of Gaza if history continues to be unkind to them. – Yours, etc,

SÉAMUS WHITE,

Dublin 7.

Sir, – Fintan O’Toole’s declaration (Opinion & Analysis, July 22nd) that Joe Biden “really has been a progressive president” is a truly bewildering statement given the Biden administration’s ongoing military, logistical and political support for the mass slaughter of men, women and children taking place in Gaza. – Yours, etc,

Senator PAUL GAVAN,

Sinn Féin,

Castleconnell,

Co Limerick.
