Sir, – When I tuned into the Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, I didn’t realise I was going to see Eurovision 2024: The Sequel. Thank goodness for Celine Dion (Eurovision winner, 1988) bringing a bit of class to the proceedings at the end. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – As a Francophile, I enjoyed overall the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Paris. Congratulations to those involved.
Ann Ingle: Deliberately going out of my way to move for no particular reason has never appealed to me
Gerry Thornley: How about an alternative look at Ireland’s Six Nations win over England?
Is Ireland anti-Semitic, an outlier of tolerance or in the middle ground?
How risky is it to buy a second-hand EV?
Apart from the heavy rain, what really put a damper on the proceedings for me, though, was the gratuitous mock portrayal of the Last Supper, on which the Eucharistic ceremony is based. This is a church sacrament which is held so dear by Christians all over the world.
The overall message of the opening ceremony was the promotion of peace, harmony and inclusion. How does the mocking of a sacred sacrament in the Christian church tie in with that theme? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I was quite surprised at some of the domestic and international negative coverage of the opening of the Paris Olympics 2024. It was brave, different, values driven, beautifully artistic and inclusive, and Paris looked as beautiful as ever. Anyone who loves Paris knows rain can never suppress her magic.
Well done to our nearest EU neighbours and friends. – Yours, etc,
GARRETT MURRAY,
Dublin 8.
