Sir, – In your profile of Marie Baker, you claim that the retired judge was involved as a barrister in case concerning the ground rents of a Monaghan estate “bestowed by Oliver Cromwell on the Earl of Shirley” (People, July 28th).
There never was an Earl of Shirley.
The Shirley estates in Co Monaghan came to that family by inheritance from the Earls of Essex.
Oliver Cromwell was not involved. – Yours, etc,
