Revocation of citizenship

Legal process

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – The opinion piece by Deirdre Malone paints a picture of citizenship being potentially stripped from an unsuspecting citizen in jig time (“‘Vague’ legislation to revoke Irish citizenship carries serious risks”, Opinion & Analysis, July 29th). In reality, due process will apply to any such process, given the implications involved.

Regrettably, there have been several instances where persons that were granted refugee status, and subsequent citizenship three years later, transpired to have been economical with the truth.

In order for the integrity of Irish citizenship to be preserved (and not treated like snuff at a wake) it is necessary to have a legal process to revoke it where warranted. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL FLYNN,
