US presidential campaign

A study in brevity

Sir, – In modern times, US presidential election campaigns run for years. It would appear that Mr Trump has been essentially campaigning for most of the last decade, even while in office. The strange sequence of events that has propelled Kamala Harris into the race gives her about a 90-day run in, literally restoring the meaning of an “election season”. Perhaps another reason to fervently hope she wins is that any victory will be closely studied for lessons to emulate.

A short and intense campaign leading to a success might cause future announcements and selections to be made later, reducing the duration of the grim spectacle for all candidates and, more importantly, the public. – Yours, etc,

BRIAN O’BRIEN,

Co Cork.
