School holidays

Everyone needs a break

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – Schools used to reopen during the first week of September. This then moved back to the last week of August. Now, my wife’s school reopens on August 23rd and a friend is going back teaching on August 21st. If the school summer holidays were to be shortened by two or three weeks, as JM Dunne suggests (Letters, August 10th), it would mean schools reopening during the first week of August. Many teachers (those involved in State exams) would end up with virtually no holiday at all. I can assure you that teachers would definitely not agree to that. – Yours, etc,

JOHN DOYLE,

Enniskeane,

Cork.
