Attitudes toward the living world

Sir, – Anne Lucey’s report on the successful reintroduction of sea eagles in Ireland shows a remarkable turnaround in attitudes toward the living world (“White-tailed sea eagles win over farmers in successful Irish return”, News, August 14th).

Initially met with resistance from some farmers, the project faced protests and hostility, including instances of poisoning and shooting of the birds. However, over time, many farmers have come to see the eagles not as a threat but as a valuable part of the ecosystem, and are now supporting the reintroduction efforts. This change in attitude illustrates that with knowledge, encouragement and experience, people can overcome their fears of environmental change. The project highlights what different interest groups in society can achieve when working in partnerships.

We can all find hope in this example, and celebrate how people in Ireland are increasingly focusing on the benefits of building a more environmentally sustainable version of society. – Yours, etc,
