Full moons, blue moons and supermoons

Lunar tidings

Sir, – I’m puzzled by the description in The Irish Times of Monday’s full moon as a blue moon (“Rare blue ‘supermoon’”, News, August 19th). As you rightly report, a blue moon is when there are two full moons in a month. The next full moon is on September 17th and the last was on July 21st. The full moon last night may have been super, but it was not blue. – Yours, etc,

LONAN McDOWELL,

Rathgar,
