Sir, – A recent train journey from Dublin Heuston to Mayo left me irritated and disappointed. No complaints about Irish Rail – everything was in order. My gripe was with a number of younger people, late teens to middle twenties, mainly women, who engaged in loud, expletive-laden conversations with one another.
Their accents were low and creaky with a tendency towards a rising intonation, making sentences sound like questions – all of it loud and irritating. Disappointing to hear that the Kardashian influence goes beyond enhanced eyebrows and more that I’ll leave unmentioned.
Is there a linguist out there who might tell us why this is on trend? – Yours, etc,
