Sir, – Fiona Reddan’s otherwise excellent analysis in “How has 13 years of Fine Gael in power affected your taxes” (Your Money, September 24th) ignores one rather significant increase in costs to households and businesses in Ireland.
Rather than comment on any single party, I will simply point out that since the current Government assumed power in June 2020, and taking into account the carbon tax increase to which the Government is committed for Budget 2025, the total tax levied on each litre of petrol in the State will increase from 85.85 cents to 104.37 cents (21.6 per cent), and on diesel from 73.60 cent to 93.78 cents (27.4 per cent).
Fuels for Ireland believes an expert group should be established to comprehensively review tax on fuel and that it should seek to balance between three priorities – supporting the transition renewable sustainable energy, providing the State with reasonable revenue from energy, and ensuring meeting Ireland’s transport and heating needs remain affordable for all. – Yours, etc,
