Sir, – I think Richard Nairn is missing the point (“Ivy is one of the most misunderstood Irish plants. It does not suck the life out of trees or strangle them”, Weekend, October 26th).
It’s not about the positive environmental aspects of this plant but its invasive and unchecked nature everywhere we look, even in our public parks, obscuring the beauty of our trees, especially in autumn and winter.
It’s no coincidence that your writer “had to teach himself to love it”. – Yours, etc,
