Sir, – I find is very disappointing that Dublin City Council’s programme to bring vacated houses and flats, called “voids”, back into residential housing stock is not getting the financial support it requires from the Department of Housing (“Cost of refurbishments of boarded-up Dublin council homes to hit €50,000 each”, News, November 22nd). A cost of €50,000 per dwelling seems very reasonable but the council would have to “borrow” money, and pay interest, to bring this ageing, albeit valuable, housing stock back into use.
I propose that the “Apple funds”, which Dublin people have helped to generate, should be made available immediately to the council to cover the costs. Each house could even have a little “Apple” on their doors. – Yours, etc,
EVELYN MAHON,
Dublin 6.
