Sir, – I am writing to express my frustration and concern about ongoing issues with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) availability, which is affecting countless women in Ireland.
Like many, I was prescribed Estradot patches (75mcg) to manage debilitating menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and anxiety. These patches made a significant difference to my quality of life, until they were suddenly out of stock. I was given a “German” alternative.
These replacement patches are far larger, cumbersome to use, and prone to peeling off or sticking to clothes. Worse still, I have since experienced the return of my menopausal symptoms, suggesting that this alternative does not work as effectively.
Alarmingly, I’ve discovered that many women are in the same position.

This issue raises an even bigger question as we approach January, when HRT will become free of charge in Ireland. However, if shortages and ineffective substitutes continue, what will this mean for the many women relying on HRT to improve their quality of life? A free system is only as good as its supply chain.
It is unacceptable that in 2024, women are being forced to endure a return of life-altering symptoms due to inconsistent HRT supply and inadequate replacements.
HRT is not a luxury – it is an essential treatment for many women. It is time to stop treating women’s health as an afterthought and take meaningful action. – Yours, etc,
CAROL CHRISTLE,
Rathgar.
