Sir, – Being a long-time admirer of John McManus and his writings, I am now wondering where the location and Eircode of his ivory tower are (“Idea that Dublin city is a lawless wasteland must be countered”, Business, Opinion, February 19th).
It is not in the interest of Dublin’s traders to talk the safety of the city down, so why should they, unless it is true? When was the last time John walked down O’Connell Street, Talbot Street, Marlborough Street, or Henry Street, during the day, let alone at night? I do on a frequent basis and it is uncomfortable and often menacing. But perhaps, like a lot of people, John does not think that the north inner city is part of the city centre and therefore not to be worried about, but it is. There is a distinct lack of police presence there. I, like a lot of Dubliners, believe a higher police presence and visibility are required, as well as a viable strategy to combat urban decay. John, take a walk on the Northside. – Yours, etc,
GARY BROWN,
Dublin 3.
