‘The State’s e-voting machine debacle ultimately cost the taxpayer €55 million’

No lessons were learned from the spending controversy of the early 2000s

Sir, – Further to Justine McCarthy’s timely article on foolish State expenditure (“Elon Musk’s brutal rampage through the US government should be a warning to our politicians”, Opinion, February 28th) in which she mentions that “the price of the ‘very attractive’ hut in Merrion Street could get you three houses”, I’m reminded also of the State’s e-voting machine debacle of the early 2000s, a failed venture that ultimately cost the taxpayer €55 million, a sum of money that would probably have built about 300 houses at the time. So much for lessons learned. – Yours, etc,

PHIL CUMMINS,

Kilcullen,

Co Kildare.
