Sir, – So much for a serious development plan for the regions.
The connection between the second and third cities in the country could best be described as “The Long and Winding Boreen”, with all due apologies to Lennon and McCartney.
While that new country, “the Pale”, bemoans the fact of no rapid transit connection from its airport, while planning to suck the water from the Shannon for its bloated population, the citizens of that other country, “Regional Ireland”, is put on hold indefinitely, wondering if a modern national infrastructure will ever be put in place that can attract a proper balance of businesses and employment to the regions.
Albert Reynolds came to Limerick about 30 years ago to announce plans for new motorways financed by EU structural funds. It appeared then, and appears still, that all these motorways lead to Dublin.
Not much has changed since then, except the names of the politicians making the announcements. – Yours, etc,
PETER McNAMARA,
Limerick.
