Madam, - Of all the reports of commemorations for the fifth anniversary of the New York atrocities the saddest, in my view, was the news that a ship was being built for the US navy using steel salvaged from the bombed buildings. The powers that be could surely have devised a more fitting memorial for all those who died on that September day.
There must be many young Americans who would jump at the chance to crew a goodwill ship around the world to meet with their contemporaries and not wish to kill them. When this new century was dawning some of us, who really were old enough to know better, harboured such ideas. Older and wiser, Madam? Some of us just get older. - Yours, etc,
JAMES MORAN, Knockanure, Co Wexford.
