Sir, – I have rarely wished to shout “bravo” as much as I did when reading Donald Clarke’s piece (Opinion, September 29th) regarding the “twaddle” which is “Arthur’s Day”. Again I say, Bravo! It is cringe-inducing to hear otherwise intelligent, discriminating people casually mention this event as though it had been unanimously decided by national referendum, (or did I miss it?).
However, let’s just give up and give in. The marketing people at Diageo must be laughing at the dupable masses, so what about our other corporations . . . what are their marketing departments doing? There are another 364 days to be claimed after all.
