Sir, - So much poor "architecture" of recent vintage abounds in Dublin that I simply avert my eyes and remain mute - but the bad and baffling construction (with bridge) lately completed for Trinity College (and named for Oliver Goldsmith) at the junction of Pearse Street and Westland Row beggars belief. It merely sustains the architectural profession's well earned reputation for much visual illiteracy.
In its long history, Trinity College has often demonstrated its capacity to select architects of proven design ability and to screen their proposed work (see the magnificence of the Venetian Museum, the Georgian Library and the Palladian Provost's House).
How the college ever allowed this monstrosity to slip past its guard remains a mystery, considering the resources at its disposal, and most importantly, its overriding duty to higher learning. Shame! - Yours, etc.,
Conor O'Kelly, Cross Avenue, Booterstown, Co Dublin.
