A chance to recall pioneer of flight

Madam, – I see that we will soon have a “landmark building” in Dublin Airport, prosaically named Terminal 2 or T2.

Here is an opportunity to pay a long-overdue tribute to Richard Crosbie, the pioneer of flight in Ireland, by naming the terminal after him, or at least dedicating it to him. This year marks the 225th anniversary of his three intrepid but unsuccessful attempts to cross the Irish Sea in a hydrogen balloon of his own design.

His adventures enthralled the Irish public from 1784 to 1786 and he has an honoured place among the world’s first aeronauts. – Yours etc.
