Madam, – The real crisis in our political system was clearly identified in your report on the Government’s proposed €250 million job subsidy scheme (Page 1, June 24th).
This proposal was not made in either House of the Oireachtas, to be debated and thrashed out by the elected representatives of the people.
Rather it emerged from the social partnership process, a process in which the democratically elected and accountable Dáil is treated as nothing but a cursory rubber stamp.
I voted for none of the Government parties and like the majority of the public, don’t belong to a union. Who represents me in the social partnership talks? This is the real crisis in Irish democracy. – Yours, etc,
