Madam, – The Irish budget is one of 16 differing and often contradicting national budgets within the euro zone.
Our single currency area is the only one in the world without a unified economic and political system. Can our monetary union continue for long without eventual economic and political union? According to a recent Eurobarometer survey, 75 per cent of Europeans (including 77 per cent in Ireland) believe that stronger co-ordination of economic policies among EU member states would be effective in fighting the crisis.
On the issue of European economic governance, it seems once again the people are way ahead of the politicians. – Yours, etc,
