Sir, – What is happening to Fine Gael? Its latest turn is to tax the containers we collect food in, as if we could do without the containers! It falls hardest on the poorest.
I am reminded of the old ladies of my childhood collecting their domestic stout from pubs in enamelled jugs! Is that how we are to cut waste? We already pay to have it collected.
If the Minister for the Environment was just that he would require supermarkets and fast-food outlets to provide free, on-site skips for unwanted packaging. Put the onus on the real polluters to pay; shoppers have little option. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I overheard a conversation between two “boy racer” types discussing the pros and cons of litter reduction. It all boiled down to the simple question of why should a driver with four perfectly working car windows bring home litter.
As I live at a distance from two local chippers that equates to the time it takes a driver to finish a burger and a drink, and have evidence of far too many working car windows, I would be delighted to see a deposit mechanism introduced. – Yours, etc,
JOHN ROGERS,
