Madam, - Given the importance of the lily as a political and tribal symbol on this island, surely the time is now ripe to create a new lily which would embody the best characteristics of the Easter and Orange lilies.
It could be pinned or stuck to the lapel, worn on a bowler hat, or even used to make "a fashion statement" ("Adams hopes lily will attrract women", The Irish Times, March 9th).
Plant breeders could get to work immediately and all that remains is to decide a new name for it. Any suggestions? - Yours, etc,
