Sir, – The dignity of yesterday’s inauguration of our ninth president, Michael D Higgins was in stark contrast to the robust nature of the presidential election campaign. It is a tribute to him that during this vigorous process he graciously maintained his poise and decorum – qualities that will serve him well during his term of office. Having garnered over one million votes he is surely a fitting expression of our democracy and hopefully a unifying force for good in our still great country. – Yours, etc,

GEOFF SCARGILL,

Loreto Grange,

Bray,

Co Wicklow.

Sir, – Those of us who “labour in the vineyard” in pursuit of human rights for the disadvantaged and the disabled at home and abroad have a real sense of hope for a better future today; “one of our own” has been elected to the highest office in the land. It has been a long time coming, but our day has come; we share pride in him with hope for what he will achieve in equal measure.

It might have rained on the parade today, but for some of us the sun shone brightly; this was a wonderful day. I wish President Higgins well in his work over the next seven years. – Yours, etc,

JOHN MULLIGAN,

Sir, – I see Michael D headed for the Park, and for once I think “the people get the leaders they deserve” in a positive sense. – Yours, etc,

MARK BOYDEN,

Bantry,

Co Cork.
