Sir, – While I welcome Doireann Ní Bhriain’s defence of the genitive case in Irish (November 9th), I fear her advice on the correct pronunciation of “Uachtaráin” has a distinct southern twang to it and does not hold sway in the north of the country. Then again, neither does the President. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – I wish the estimable Doireann Ní Bhriain well in her effort to guide people in the proper pronunciation of Áras an Uachtaráin but it’s a big ask (iarracht mór?) seeing as how so many broadcasters on RTÉ and elsewhere these days cannot differentiate between An Dáil and Anne Doyle. – Yours, etc,
