Sir, – My congratulations to the residents of the Cork Street area of the capital in persuading Dublin City Council to develop an existing 1.2-acre vacant site into a new park to be known as Weaver Park (Olivia Kelly, "New public park planned for Dublin city centre", September 21st). This is momentous news, not just for the green space-starved city but for thousands of Dubliners whose lives will be enriched on a daily basis by the provision of this facility.
The area’s residents were quite right in claiming the site as belonging to them; local authorities manage, but do not own, such places.
An additional ecological benefit will accrue over time when this open green space attracts not only people of all ages but also provides a habitat for our endangered bumblebee population. – Yours, etc,
CAITRIONA LAWLOR,
Mount Merrion,
Co Dublin.
