Sir, - Lara Marlowe tells us (April 1st) that Mr Jean-Marie Le Pen "borrows indiscriminately from the very people he condemns...he repeated - without attribution - the American Founding Fathers' desideratum of government of the people, by the people, and for the people.'"

Mr Le Pen may not like the American Founding Fathers, but then, none of them ever said anything as absurd as "Government of the people." That was Abraham Lincoln: Miss Marlow's quote is from his Gettysburg Address.

The Founding Fathers - men properly called the "framers" - would have been appalled at the populist notion of government described by Lincoln. I know I am. - Yours, etc.,
