Madam, – One of the most consistent ingredients in calls for reform is the number of TDs in the Dáil. If we leave this issue to politicians, they will set up a commission (or similar). This will take years to report.
Let’s find out what the people think now. Hold a referendum in conjunction with the general election. Give three choices: 166 seats, 123 seats or 80 seats. Declare the result of the referendum first. Then, if the people want 166 TDs, the result should be assessed as before.
However, if the people want 123 or 80, one or two fewer should be returned in each constituency, as appropriate. – Yours, etc,
