Sir, – Michael D Higgins provided a freely given commitment before his election to serve one term only. I have no doubt that this commitment will be honoured.
The President’s eloquent silence is welcome. Early confirmation that he will vacate office in late 2018 would encourage a media-induced frenzy of undignified succession speculation.
I respectfully suggest that his press officer advises the media that a statement regarding the President’s plans will be issued at the appropriate time, ie early September 2018. – Yours, etc,
