A secular Christmas?

Sir, – And so it’s here again, the season when loving people spend ages thinking of just the right gift to light up a loved one’s face.

When friends and families make great efforts to get together for some festive fun and cheer. When people buy charity Christmas cards in the hope that some of the money they spend will do some good work somewhere. When children in schools collect food for hampers and hold Christmas parties for local elderly people. When people make a special effort to drop in on a neighbour for a cup of tea or a nip of sherry. When people decorate their houses with sparkle and light trying to capture some magic in the middle of winter. When children almost burst with excitement as they give out the presents they saved up to buy. I could go on but I don’t think there is any need. I think Christ would be happy. – Yours, etc,
