Sir, – Re Aiden Desmond’s rebuff (December 20th) of Domini Kemp’s penchant for garlic (Magazine, December 17th), I applaud Ms Kemp’s brave advocacy for a much-maligned bulb.

At a time when it was neither profitable nor popular, your food writer was one of the few voices to push the clove agenda. The advantages of garlic are multi-fold: it keeps you regular, it shields you from vampires and, most importantly, one always knows what someone has had for dinner the night before. Now that the shackles of our Catholic past are thrown off, let us feel free to indulge all of the senses and embrace a future where garlic adorns every course of every meal. – Yours, etc,
