Madam, - I read yesterday's letters page with, as always, interest - but also with a degree of gloom. Contributors discussed dissatisfaction with central Government and party politics; disparities in political representation across the country; Government Minister's pay and their PR machines; the legacy of the current President and a president that never was; and self-serving local government bureaucracies accountable to no one.
Others outlined their concerns on environmental issues and climate change; corruption in the professions; the affliction of drugs; excessive alcohol consumption and its resulting impact on people's lives; the never-ending debate on abortion; and forgotten Irish heroes.
Recent topics not covered in yesterday's page include the health service, education and literacy standards, transport, and, of course, the erection of Christmas decorations two months before December 25th.
Congratulations Madam, to your Letters page for succinctly encapsulating our so-called modern Ireland. - Yours, etc,
JARLATH MOLLOY, Stanford Road, London, W8.
