Madam, - The Gallery supplement to your edition of December 22nd, in its review of 1981, mentioned inflation and unemployment rates of around 18 per cent.

Some of your readers may recall that the aggregate rate of 36 per cent was known as the "Misery Index".

While our current economic position is pretty bad, today's Misery Index of around 10 per cent is a long way below the heights recorded in the 1980s. - Yours, etc,
