Madam, - Your edition of May 3rd, carried two contrasting stories: the revelation of salaries paid to top TV presenters; and the story of Chris Rintoul, who survived a horrendous cliff-fall in Donegal, as told by Lorna Siggins in her new book.

I was shocked to the core by the amount paid to the top TV earners for what I would term vulgar, populist pap, while the narrative of the dramatic rescue had me glued to my seat.

It was the most heartwarming story of skill, courage, heroism, and sheer unadulterated unselfishness on the part of John McCartney, of the Air Corps team, who winched Chris Rintoul to safety. It is doubtful if his salary is in the hundreds of thousands.

This valiant deed was done for neither reward nor fame, but simply in the line of duty and professionalism. - Yours, etc.,
