Madam, – How disheartening it was to read that the Minister for Finance Michael Noonan rule out a potentially rich vein of revenue, a tax on text messages, on the basis that he was “not aware of a similar tax anywhere else in the world” (Front page, June 13th). Government, banks and borrowers all fell into the property and credit bubble because of the herding mindset: “everyone else is doing it”.

Innovation and bravery are needed to make an economic recovery; following the crowd will be of little use in our circumstances. – Yours, etc,
